To review RuneScape in 2018 seems a primarily redundant endeavor. The classic game is a lighthouse-ish legendary MMO that no-one who got educated and lectured between its initial release and today haven't played or at least heard of. 17-year continuous modifications and improvements for the game are the way makes Developer Jagex stay relevant, and in this spirit, they’ve just released a mobile port of Old School RuneScape.
To the uninitiated, RuneScape has been changing thoroughly all the way, yet fanboys always worship the 2007 build of Runescape 2. In 2013, Jagex released Old School RuneScape - proved to be a hit with the fans - enough to justify a mobile port of it, and enough to justify a review of the said mobile port.
Basically, the mobile port Old School Runescape is not just designed for catering to the old or current players of Runescape, but it is a great game for everyone in general.
Old School RuneScape is no way to divide from the nostalgia that 2007 RuneScape collects, and the game clearly reckons on those collections. Not only is the in-game world back to its noughties client but quests and skills released prior have been erased accordingly, the graphics are at their most spectacularly angular, and even the in-game music has been replaced with the synthetic-sounding pre-remastered melodies.
Clearly, the fan base has been encouraged because of the release of the mobile port - each server was packed full of gamers grinding skills, taking part in quests and selling and buying to each other Not since the game’s prime many years ago has the world seemed so packed and alive.
Some favored contents from later build of RuneScape have been removed, such as the summoning skill or the chaos tunnels location. However, the decreased amount of contents ensures the game keep up its unique characteristics - Runescape featured the minimal appearance and pared back looks as its aesthetically distinct factor and contents retain the features.
The fact it’s a mobile port is made clear swiftly - many NPCs says “right click,” meanwhile keyboard shortcuts are displayed constantly - it seems the only time the game admits you’re playing the port is in the tutorial island. However, the HUD is a treat to perform and has been redesigned suitably for phones and other mobile devices. Windows can be closed and replaced to accelerate the gameplay window; clearly, some of the positive elements of RuneScape 3 made their way into the port.
There are some issues, although. The game frequently auto-freezes, leading into the app has to be rebooted. If the app is closed for too long, the player is forced to be logged out, which would be a good feature if it didn’t log off so quickly - usually, there isn’t enough time to open Spotify and pick up a song before being logged out. In addition to that, the app is an enormous battery drain, so you can't play for long periods of time away from a charger.
In spite of these issues, the mobile port of Old School RuneScape is the epinephrine shot the game required to stay fresh. Jagex has extracted Runescape to the most fundamental and reminiscent core and tweaked it perfectly to suit for mobile platforms. But more than gameplay and tonal upgrades, the mobile nature of the game creates a brand new level of functionality to the game. Grinding skills is a lot more convenient when you can do it and watch your favorite TV show episodes simultaneously; modern tablets and phones are a lot more powerful and portable than the computers most people owned back in 2007, and so the game is a lot smoother to play.
Old School RuneScape has never been as entertained or as easy to play as it is on mobile devices, both for returning players looking for that reminiscent hit or new players who curiously seek what the fun it holds inside.
